About

Working with me, you benefit from twenty years’ leadership experience in major organisations, including Hewlett-Packard (France), the National Health Service and the National Institute for Health Research.

I have studied improvement theory with Warwick University Business School, leadership with Ashridge Business School and innovation with INSEAD Business School (Paris). I have an ILM 7 (Institute of Leadership and Management) Certificate in Executive and Senior Leadership Coaching and Mentoring.

Stephen Lock was an executive in the National Institute for Health Research during the Covid-19 pandemic. As interim CITO, he was part of the team that, under intense pressure, organised the UK government’s urgent research response, successfully recruiting more than one million participants to Covid treatment and vaccine research. Throughout this time he retained his role as a voluntary well-being support leader, looking after his colleagues and the health of his organisation.

Stephen's approach to coaching is informed by more than just his professional life. He is known internationally for his writing on self-managing teams and progressive organisations. He has a life-long interest in philosophical enquiry and personal growth which has developed into a regular yoga and meditation practice. Born in the UK, he has travelled extensively in Latin America, lived in France and worked in corporate America.

Testimonials

I can recommend Stephen without hesitation. He is a natural coach by training, nature, and disposition.

He is someone who has learnt these lessons firsthand and found a way to break them down into practical tools to help identify and accelerate YOUR change. His coaching sessions are the right mix of discovery and destination, tools and doing, sharing and fun, reflection and making room to grow. There is always a generous amount of time so well worth reaching out to Stephen to understand if his approach is right for you.

Associate Director CX Analytics Consulting, Concentrix, EMEA

In January 2022 I moved to a new leadership role within the National Institute for Health and Care Research and sought coaching support from Stephen. This was based on my experience of having seen how he works within his own team and with other senior colleagues and his coaching style to helping address challenges.

Through a small number of coaching sessions, I was able to confidently develop an approach for supporting the team, establishing the best environment for them to thrive and helped to refocus our activities more strategically. The elements that I found most useful in our sessions were the guided conversations where I could identify and reflect on the options available to me. I appreciated the patient and supportive approach provided by Stephen and as a result, my confidence has grown. The team work collaboratively and effectively and I have recommended Stephen to other colleagues as a result of the coaching that I had.
